Finding an Affirming Therapist as a Queer or Trans Person in Oregon
"LGBTQ+ affirming" appears on a lot of therapist profiles. It doesn't always mean the same thing.
For queer and trans clients, finding a therapist who is genuinely equipped to support your life ... not just tolerant of it ... can take real effort. And the cost of landing with someone who isn't actually prepared can be high. You spend your sessions educating them, managing their learning curve, or quietly minimizing the parts of yourself that feel too complicated to explain.
Here are a few things worth looking for and asking about:
Does the therapist have lived experience or specific training? General affirmation is different from genuine familiarity. A therapist who has done focused training in gender identity, queer relational dynamics, or sexuality ... or who holds relevant lived experience ... will show up differently in the room.
How do they talk about identity on their website and in consultation? Language matters. Therapists who are genuinely equipped tend to use current, specific language rather than broad umbrella statements.
Can they hold complexity? Queer and trans lives are not monolithic. A good therapist can sit with the full range of your experience ... including the parts that don't fit a tidy narrative.
Do they understand how systems shape mental health? Internalized oppression, family rejection, medical gatekeeping, workplace discrimination ... these are not background details. They are clinical material. A therapist with a social justice lens will treat them that way.
At Systems Centered Wellness, several of our clinicians bring both personal and professional understanding of queer and trans experience. Dana Gulley (he/they) identifies as queer and transmasculine and works with clients across the full spectrum of identity navigation. Shep Shepard (they/them) joins us in August.
You deserve a space where you don't have to shrink to be seen.
